Poznan

Poznan’s oldest quarter is the “Cathedral Island” (Ostrow Tumski), in the middle of the Warta River; its 10th century cathedral contains the tombs of Poland’s first rulers. The former market-place (Rynek), with its Renaissance style town-hall and the decorative facades of the middle-class dwellings, is one of main attractions of the old-city.

The two goats, which appear each noon on the famous clock-tower of the town-hall, have become a symbol of the city; the tower itself functions as museum of the city’s history. The several times rebuilt Royal Castle - which now functions as the Museum of Applied Arts – and remnants of the old city-wall, can be found not far from the market-place.

Poznan is famous for its fairs and exhibitions; the Poznan International Fair stages several dozen commercial exhibitions every year, which are attended by a large number of tourists.
